First Peter 2:9
"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light."

Tempted by the fruit

Genesis 3:6 The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too.(emphasis added)

So often we'd love to blame our sins on others. So often it would be easy to point to a circumstance or another person and claim that it was their fault that we sinned. In most cases, no one would blame us for doing so. It would be an accepted excuse, and everyone would move on. But we know the truth inside of us. We wanted to sin.

It's no secret that sin is desirable. We wouldn't do it if it didn't look like it would gain us pleasure or some other good feeling. Sin looks good on the outside. It's on the inside that it's rotten to the core. But we don't consider that rotten inside when we're tempted, our eyes glaze over at the sight of that glimmering appearance. We want it.

Eve wanted to eat the apple in the Garden of Eden. We blame Satan for the first sin, and he certainly was at fault for tempting Eve, that's what he does. He lies, he sugar-coats sin, he makes the rotten look desirable. But Eve wanted the apple. She knew it was off limits but she knew that eating the apple would gain her knowledge, and she ate it. Likewise, Adam did no protesting. Not only did he not try to talk Eve out of taking that bite, he also had a bite of his own. The first man and the first woman did not just sin because Satan showed up. They wanted the pleasure. Satan just talked them into it.

The only way we can truly remain guiltless when temptation presents itself is to humble ourselves before God and resist the devil, and he will flee from us (James 4:7).

Ephesians 6:13 Therefore, put on every piece of God's armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.
