First Peter 2:9
"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light."

Humbled Servant

Job 40:4 Behold I am of small account; what shall I answer thee? I lay my hand on my mouth.

How many times have we all spoken out of vein conceit or pride? How often have we acted out of shear arrogance? Think on those times and try to remember; has it ever gained us anything?

Sure, in the short term acting out of pride and arrogance gains us what we were seeking, be it recognition, getting ahead, or just selfish pleasure. But in the long run, in our quest to develop a character like Christ's; did it gain us anything?

As followers of Christ, we can all learn a lot from the example set for us by Job. For it was Job who, after losing almost everything he had in this life, said, "Blessed be the name of the Lord." Or, having been reprimanded by God Himself, genuinely humbled himself. Job spoke sincere words of humility before the Lord, "Behold I am of small account; what shall I answer thee?" And there, he acted out that humility. "I lay my hand on my mouth." He shut up.

Maybe next time we are about to act out of our own selfish ambitions we ought to stop and, like Job, consider how great God is, and how very small we are in comparison. That should lead us to the right action: quiet humility and worship.
